We Are Blood has provided stem cell collections for adult patients in the Austin community since 2011. Stem cell therapy is a type of medical treatment that uses stem cells – the body’s foundational cells – because they can develop into many different types of specialized cells. Because of this unique ability, stem cells can potentially repair or regenerate damaged tissues and organs, help treat diseases, and restore a patient’s quality of life. Stem cell transplants are especially vital for cancer patients as they can donate their own stem cells for a future transplant, offering the potential for remission, or even a cure.
We Are Blood’s Clinical Services Department has taken the next step in expanding patient services within Central Texas. After two years of preparation, in partnership with Dell Children’s Medical Center, the clinical services team completed the first pediatric stem cell collection on May 16, 2025. The collection was a critical step forward in implementing the first pediatric stem cell transplant program in Central Texas, giving patients access to advanced therapies that were previously only available outside the region.
The Region’s First Pediatric Stem Cell Program
This groundbreaking achievement marks a higher level of cancer care for families in Central Texas. The ability to collect and transplant a child’s own stem cells within Central Texas provides lifesaving treatment closer to home, eliminating the burden of traveling long distances and lessening the emotional and financial strain on families.
We Are Blood’s years of experience in stem cell therapy combined with the supportive and innovative team at Dell Children’s has created a wonderful partnership focused on the future of stem cell collection. We are excited to enter a new era of pediatric care for our community.
