Gary Carter is a dedicated donor, with nearly 70 years of blood and platelet donations under his belt. This generous gesture started when he was 18, following in the footsteps of his father who made regular donations.
Carter’s inspiration to donate more regularly was deepened after witnessing the routine need for blood transfusions while working at Brackenridge in trauma. He shares of his blood donations, “Before, it was sporadic. And after that, it was every 8 weeks.”
It was through that dedication, both as a whole blood and later a platelet donor, Carter was recently able to celebrate an incredible milestone with We Are Blood — 150 gallons donated!
Carter’s contribution to the community cannot be overstated. Every unit donated has the potential to save three lives!
One Pint Per Year
On average, We Are Blood needs to collect 200 units daily to support the regular transfusion needs of Central Texas providers. When talking about access to transfusable blood products, Carter says, “There is a constant need.”
“If everybody who could [donate] would do one unit a year, there would never be a shortage.”
