In the wake of the recent tragedy on Sixth Street, our community has shown what it truly means to come together in moments that matter most.
In the first ten days of March alone, over 3,450 donors came forward to give blood and platelets at We Are Blood, and remarkably, over 1,300 of those individuals were first-time donors. These numbers are far more than statistics – they represent compassion, generosity, and the willingness of neighbors to step up when fellow Central Texan’s lives are on the line.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who donated and to those who attempted to donate during this difficult time. The response from our community was tremendous, and it serves as a powerful reminder of the kindness and solidarity that defines Central Texas.
We extend a heartfelt thank you to the donors who showed extraordinary patience and compassion during busy donation days. Many of you waited, adjusted schedules, and encouraged others to help. Your understanding was deeply appreciated during this critical time.
We also want to recognize the incredible dedication of our We Are Blood staff teams, volunteers, and community partners who made this response possible. Many stepped in on days they were not scheduled, worked long hours, helped organize special drives, and provided supplies to support the community’s desire to give. Their commitment ensured that we could meet the surge of donors and keep the blood supply strong. Their efforts are a powerful example of what it means to serve the greater Austin community with compassion and resilience.
At the same time, our hearts remain with those affected by the tragedy. We offer our sincere condolences to the victims, their loved ones, and everyone impacted.
Moments like these remind us how fragile life can be, and how important it is to care for one another.
Keeping Central Texas Strong
At We Are Blood, we are incredibly proud to serve a community that responds with such generosity and empathy. Seeing so many people step forward to help strangers in need reinforces why our mission matters every single day.
To the 1,310 first-time donors, your decision to donate for the first time made an immediate difference for patients in our hospitals. We hope this experience inspires you to continue donating and become a regular part of protecting our local blood supply.
Blood is needed every day, not only in moments of crisis, but year-round for surgeries, cancer treatments, trauma care, and chronic conditions. By becoming a regular donor, you help ensure that lifesaving blood is always available for the patients who depend on it.
Together, this community proved that even in the face of tragedy, compassion rises.
From all of us at We Are Blood… Thank you for showing up for your neighbors in need!
