National Trauma Awareness Month emphasizes that injury prevention is a daily responsibility for each of us, and that safe choices, no matter how small, can inspire others to create a safer and healthier future for our community. The 2025 theme is “Model Safety Every Day: For A Stronger Tomorrow”.
This May, we highlight the importance of injury prevention, the need for access to prehospital blood transfusions, and the value of educating the community on how to respond to traumatic incidents.
Trauma Awareness
Since 1988, National Trauma Awareness Month has aimed to shine a light on the multifaceted aspects of trauma, to underscore the critical role safety plays in protecting our communities, and to emphasize injury prevention.
In conjunction with this important cause, We Are Blood wants to highlight the importance of advocacy for prehospital blood access. Blood transfusions effectively save lives. Swift access to blood products by EMS agencies allows them to administer a transfusion before a patient even reaches the hospital, which is pivotal in improving survival rates, particularly for those enduring traumatic injuries.
Trauma Care
According to America’s Blood Centers, prehospital blood transfusions have proven to help reduce mortality rates by up to 40% in trauma patients. Research studies have demonstrated that timely access to blood products before patients reach the hospital can significantly enhance outcomes for individuals with severe traumatic injuries, decreasing the likelihood of complications and promoting better overall recovery.
That’s why We Are Blood created the HERO+ Whole Blood Program. We currently work with four local EMS agencies (Austin-Travis County, Williamson County, Buda FD, and Blanco County) to provide prehospital blood transfusions, improving survival rates for those facing traumatic injuries locally.
During Trauma Awareness Month, we recognize the critical role our local EMS agencies play in saving lives within our communities and celebrate National EMS Week with them.
Themed “We Care. For Everyone” between May 18-24. This annual event brings together the American College of Emergency Physicians and the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians to celebrate the work of EMS professionals, raise awareness, and promote education about emergency care.
Trauma Response
This month also celebrates the 29th anniversary of the Stop the Bleed movement. We Are Blood highlights Stop the Bleed, an educational initiative designated to help individuals learn how to stop or slow bleeding in the event of an emergency.
We Are Bloods partner, America’s Blood Centers (ABC), has formed a national partnership with ACS Stop the Bleed – a significant leap forward in emergency preparedness, creating a comprehensive approach to saving lives by equipping individuals with the skills to effectively control severe bleeding in emergencies, while simultaneously emphasizing the crucial role of blood donation.
The We Are Blood Difference
We Are Blood proudly partners with ABC, Stop the Bleed, and our local EMS agencies to take action during National Trauma Awareness Month 2025 by highlighting trauma awareness, trauma response and trauma care.
We will engage in Stop the Bleed training in partnership with the Capital Area Texas Regional Advisory Council (CATRAC) with the intention of We Are Blood being able to equip students of varying ages with the skills to respond during an emergency event through a series of student workshops.
Take Action
You can make a difference this May! Advocate for timely access to blood products to support those in critical need, learn about trauma prevention tactics to take for your home and family, and schedule a blood donation at a donor center or drive near you. Together, we can create a safer, healthier future for our Central Texas community.
