Donate by January 15 for a Chance to Attend a Private Dinner at Franklin Barbecue
Every January National Blood Donor Month brings in the new year with the important message that donating blood saves lives and improves the health of many in our community and nationwide.
This January, We Are Blood has a critical need for blood and platelet donations for local patients.
To celebrate National Blood Donor Month and encourage much-needed donations, especially the first days of the new year, WRB is running two special giveaways.
First, individuals who donate blood or platelets by January 15 can enter for a chance to win two spots at a private dinner at Franklin Barbecue in February. Plus, those who donate platelets at least twice in January will earn a $25 HEB gift card.
Donations dip significantly in January as people settle into their post-holiday schedules and schools wait to reopen for the spring semester.
Additionally, We Are Blood’s annual mall drives in November and December saw significantly less donors than in prior years. Donation appointments are down the first week of the new year and WRB especially needs O type whole blood donors and any type platelet donors to avoid shortages that put patients at risk.
The extraordinary growth in the need for blood transfusions in Central Texas continues. WRB experienced a 55% increase in the need for platelets from 2017 to 2022. During the same time period, the need for red cells, collected traditionally from whole blood donation, grew 24%.
In addition to donations made at We Are Blood’s four donor centers, the organization hosts approximately 80-100 mobile drives per month in order to meet the need.
