I never imagined that after delivering a healthy son, I would be fighting for my life within minutes.
What began as a relatively uneventful forceps delivery quickly turned into a catastrophic emergency when I suffered an amniotic fluid embolism. I became suddenly nauseated, my blood pressure dropped, and I struggled to breathe as my condition deteriorated despite a rapid medical response. A severe hemorrhagic event followed, and I was on the verge of losing consciousness and entering cardiac arrest.
The intervention that saved my life was blood.
In total, I required 25 units of blood products. Without access to donated blood, I would not be alive.
My son is now four months old, and every day I am reminded that I am here because of the generosity of donors. Their gift allowed me to return home to my family and watch my child grow.
