National Minority Donor Awareness Month celebrates the impact of diverse donors and highlights the need for more donors from minority communities. Minority communities often face health disparities such as higher occurrences of diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease, contributing to an increased need for organ transplants and blood transfusions, making their donations essential for the most compatible transfusion or transplant matches.
However, only about 12% of U.S. blood donations come from minority groups. Expanding minority donor engagement is critical to supporting patients with conditions like sickle cell disease and thalassemia, each requiring frequent transfusions from donors closely matched to the recipient’s ethnic background for best compatibility. This compatibility goes beyond blood type, requiring additional matching criteria to avoid potentially severe complications.
1 in 3 Black Donors is a Match for a Sickle Cell Patient
To maximize compatibility for blood transfusions, We Are Blood has included goals around expanding blood testing, allowing for in-house identification of antigens. By expanding in-house testing opportunities, We Are Blood aims to establish a cost-effective route to identify the most compatible matches for the transfusion needs of patients within our community. You may read more about this in Every Drop Counts, our 5-year strategic plan.
Minority Donors Make a Major Impact
Minority donors not only have the opportunity to provide more compatible matches for transfusion needs within their community but also have higher rates of O-Positive and O-Negative blood types. In the United States, approximately 51% of African Americans and 57% of Hispanics have Type O blood, whereas 45% of Caucasians have Type O blood. Their donations can make a major impact on everyone in the community.
As Central Texas grows, so does the diverse nature of our community, making it more necessary than ever to foster a donor community that reflects and supports our neighbors.
We Are Blood is proud to serve Central Texans as the sole provider of blood and platelets to over 50 hospitals and EMS agencies across our 10-county area, providing a safe and friendly environment for donors of all backgrounds.
