We Are Family: Dr. Faheem Ahmed

Dr. Ahmed shares a unique perspective regarding blood and platelet donation. With a background in oncology and hematology, Dr. Ahmed serves the Austin area as one of four Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute transplant and cellular therapy specialists of St. David’s South Austin Medical Center.

Every day, Dr. Ahmed supports cancer patients fighting blood cancers, mostly lymphomas, and those who have relapsed after their initial treatment. He repeatedly witnesses cancer patients receiving platelet infusion therapy and gaining strength and energy.

He states, “The procedures we do would not be possible without the support of [blood and platelet] donors. Without [them], bone marrow transplants could not exist. Without donors, we could not treat cancers.”

As the only blood center serving all hospitals, surgical centers, and EMS agencies in our ten-county region of Central Texas, We Are Blood donors are integral to ensuring healthcare providers and trauma centers are able to provide lifesaving transfusion care to local patients when they need it most.

Dr. Ahmed Calls on the Community

“Whether young or old, regardless of color or religion, consider blood donation as a charitable work,” he says. Because while we are healthy and able to donate now, life could change in an instant, and we could be on the receiving end.

“There is no AI, no technology, no innovation that I can see on the horizon that will replace donors,” he shares. “This is a charitable work, where even the richest person on earth cannot replace a donation. It is invaluable. It is precious.”

Dr. Ahmed notes that whether it’s blood, platelets, or fresh frozen plasma that you can donate, everyone should try to join the list of We Are Blood donors. Because sometimes there are groups of people with rare blood types and antigens, and it can be difficult to obtain a blood match right away. He requests the community be available for those families.

“Imagine the impact you will create in someone’s life,” he continues. “Those families may not know your face, but in their heart, they will know that some[one] took care of their loved one and they will be very appreciative of what you have done.”
