Lyle Boardman’s commitment to blood donation has spanned decades, with more than 20 gallons of blood donated since he started in the 1960s. However, his true motivation to donate grew even stronger after his daughter, who was just five months old at the time, required transfusions for a life-threatening condition. The experience left a lasting impact on Lyle, inspiring him to continue donating blood regularly for the past 50+ years.
Lyle’s daughter, who was diagnosed with intussusception, received multiple transfusions during her treatment, and Lyle’s own sense of purpose in donating blood grew from that moment on.
Today, Lyle’s consistent donations have potentially saved up to 960 lives. His incredible dedication to giving back doesn’t just come from a sense of responsibility – it comes from a deep, personal understanding of how important blood donations are for those in need. “Every time I donate, I think of my daughter, and I know that my donation is helping someone just like her,” Lyle explained.
It’s Never Too Late
Now, at 83 years old, Lyle continues to donate regularly, undeterred by age-related myths about blood donation. “I’ve heard the myths about age limits, but I don’t buy into them,” he said with a smile. “As long as I have blood and veins, I’ll keep giving.” His continued commitment is an inspiration to donors of all ages, proving that it’s never too late to make a difference.
Lyle’s story is a powerful reminder of the power of personal commitment and the life-saving impact blood donation can have – not just for patients but for the donors themselves, who experience the fulfillment of knowing their actions are directly saving lives. With every donation, Lyle is not just giving blood – he’s giving hope.
Thank you, Lyle! Our We Are Blood team is deeply grateful for your dedication.
