When Melvin (Mel) Barrentine and his wife, Randi, moved to Austin in the early 1980s, they had no idea their lives would soon take a turn that would forever change his outlook on blood donation.
At just 32 years old, Randi was diagnosed with large B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Her treatment required chemotherapy, and with it, a steady supply of blood products, including platelets. At the time, Mel wasn’t a regular blood donor. His focus was on being a husband and father, supporting Randi through her cancer journey. Witnessing firsthand the lifesaving impact of platelet donations, his perspective shifted.
“Her journey with cancer really solidified my dedication of trying to help others,” Mel recalls.
“This ability to donate blood actually saves somebody’s life. Out of all the different benevolent things somebody can do, blood donation is a gift that saves lives.”
Randi’s battle with cancer left a lasting impact. Decades later, Mel is a 50+ gallon platelet donor, a milestone that represents countless lives touched by his generosity. He knows that there is no artificial substitute for blood donation – patients rely on the kindness of others.
“We need to continue to have citizens of the community become regular donors to help save lives,” he adds.
Over the years, Melvin has collected more than just donation milestones. His closet is full of We Are Blood t-shirts, hats, and other swag – a testament to his commitment.
Melvin’s story is a reminder that we all have the power to make a difference. By rolling up our sleeves, we can offer a gift to someone that no one else can – a second chance at life for a neighbor in need.
