Since 1975, Thundercloud Subs has been a staple in the Austin area, serving up fresh, fast, and healthy food. At their core is a culture of community – it’s about their people, their quirky and fun Austin-y atmosphere, and how they give back to Central Texans and better our community at large.
“2025 is our 50th anniversary, which is really hard to believe, and we’ve had the same basic concept from day one,” shares Mike Haggerty, co-owner of Thundercloud Subs. “It’s simple – from fresh bread to sliced meat, cheese and veggies daily to creating our spreads from scratch.”
Over the years, Thundercloud Subs has given back via some major community projects, including the annual Turkey Trot, a tradition since 1991 and the largest five-mile run in Texas that has helped raise nearly $5 million for Caritas of Austin, a local nonprofit dedicated to individuals experiencing poverty and homelessness.
Additionally, they dedicate a portion of their annual marketing budget to support local nonprofit initiatives, and We Are Blood is grateful to be one of their community partners.
How Subs Are Saving Lives
“It’s pretty amazing that one person donating blood can save up to three lives,” highlights Haggerty. “That metric right there gives enough reason that everybody should contribute and what a meaningful contribution it is.”
“In the big picture, it’s an opportunity for an individual to save three lives by giving just 45 minutes of their time.”
Through our annual campaign, Thundercloud Subs allows We Are Blood to offer free small subs to all donors as a thank you for making a blood or platelet donation at the beginning of the year.
Haggerty adds, “The fact that one sub means three lives are saved… I mean, how do you equate that to any currency or numeric value? It’s just really cool.”
