Founded in September 1951, We Are Blood was the first nonprofit blood bank to serve the greater Austin area. Over the years, we’ve grown into four donor center locations, made mobile drives available 7 days a week, and now serve 10 counties and over 50 hospitals, medical facilities, and EMS agencies as the sole provider of blood products for patient transfusion.
Our community has grown rapidly over the past decade, and We Are Blood has seen an extraordinary increase in the need for our services. Today, we provide 96% more platelets and 55% more red cells annually for local patients than we did in 2015.
With continued growth in our region and new medical treatments and programs becoming available locally, we anticipate a further 25% increase in the amount of blood products needed for local patients by 2030.
As we celebrate our 75th year, we reflect on all we’ve accomplished and look ahead to new opportunities to meet the increasing needs of patients within our community.
We Are Blood launches a strategic plan through 2030
Together, we save lives of Central Texans daily through the collaboration of generous blood donors, blood drive hosts, community partners, volunteers, and staff who work tirelessly to provide safe, transfusable blood products for every Central Texas patient in need of a transfusion. It is through our shared commitment, each contribution, and every single donation that local patients may receive the lifesaving care they need.
Every Drop Counts, We Are Blood’s multi-year strategic plan, outlines critical investments and growth opportunities required for We Are Blood to meet those growing needs of our community well into the future.
With steadfast commitment to our mission to provide and protect the community’s blood supply, the plan is segmented into four impact areas: serve, innovate, engage, and empower.
