We Are Blood offers in-house therapeutic phlebotomy for patients who need blood drawn to treat an underlying medical condition. A current physician order form is required for therapeutic phlebotomy. Orders are good for one year. There are three programs associated with therapeutic phlebotomy:
Hereditary Hemochromatosis Crossover (HHCX)
This program is designated for patients who have a diagnosis of Hereditary Hemochromatosis. All individuals with this diagnosis will need an order form from your physician to give blood. Once we receive the form, we will put a note on your profile. If you meet all regular donor eligibility criteria and DO NOT have any other medical conditions that would require therapeutic phlebotomy, you will qualify to donate blood for use in our community hospitals.
If your physician wants you to donate more frequently or you do not meet general donor qualifications, you will need to schedule all donation appointments in accordance to your doctor’s orders through the clinical services department at our Lamar location. (HHCX Enrollment Order Form link)
Testosterone Replacement Therapy Crossover (TTCX)
This program is designated for patients who are on Testosterone Replacement Therapy. If you are taking TRT and meet all regular donor eligibility criteria, you will qualify to donate blood red blood cells for use in our community hospitals. At your appointment, let a technician know you are taking TRT, so we can add a comment to your profile.
The FDA has specified that plasma products obtained from patients with polycythemia secondary to Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) should not be used for patient use. For this reason, it is important that TRT donors requiring therapeutic phlebotomy be enrolled in this program to appropriately manage their blood products.
We only need an order form from your prescribing physician if your physician wants you to donate more frequently, you have other underlying medical conditions or do not meet general donor qualifications. This would require therapeutic phlebotomy. If we must utilize the physician order form, you will schedule all donations in accordance to your doctor’s orders through the clinical services department at our Lamar location. Therapeutic Phlebotomy
Therapeutic phlebotomy is available for individuals who have been diagnosed with other medical conditions that require such treatment, such as Polycythemia Vera, or known infectious disease, underlying health conditions, or risk factors that would make the blood unsuitable for community use. Routine donor testing will not be performed on therapeutic draws that must be discarded. (Therapeutic Phlebotomy Order form link)
